Brian graduated in history in 1989, and subsequently lectured and tutored in Trinity College. His publications include British Sources for Irish History 1485-1641 (Irish Manuscripts Commission 1997). He has lectured throughout Ireland and in the US on history, genealogy and electronic publishing. In 1998 he jointly founded Eneclann with Fiona Fitzsimons. Since then he has specialised in the company’s digitisation work, both for commercial clients and for the company’s in-house publications catalogue. These projects have included managing teams of archivists to catalogue and index many record series at the National Archives, Military Archives, National Library of Ireland, and dozens of other repositories. Eneclann projects have included imaging and indexing over 60 million records. He has overseen the development of Eneclann’s extensive offline and online catalogue, played a key role in establishing Irish Origins, the Archive CD Books Ireland project, and in 2010 helped forge the joint venture between brightsolid and Eneclann that saw the launch of FindMyPast Ireland.
Over the last few years Brian has focused on project management and business development as CEO of Eneclann. He has project managed large state sector contracts (e.g. the Departments of Health, Agriculture and Defence) with budgets in excess of €1 million. Brian was the technical advisor for the landmark Trinity College project to digitise the 1641 Depositions, as well as other cultural and educational initiatives. Brian has also one of those responsible for the mass digitisation project currently underway at the government website www.irishgenealogy.ie.
